Che bella estate!!!
What a wonderful summer! In this picture I am with colleagues of the ITALIAN DIASPORA STUDIES SEMINAR at Università Degli Studi Roma Tre during this summer at Rome. It was a challenging, thought provoking and intensive time with wonderful scholars!
The two home institutions John D. Calandra Italian American Institute / Queens College (The City University of New York, USA) and Dipartimento di Lingue, Letterature e Culture Straniere (Roma Tre University, ITALY) brought together a stimulating group of people on the road of a proactive reflection about Italian diasporas, especially in the US.
Grazie mille John D Calandra Italian American Institute , #UniversitàdegliStudiRomaTre Fred Gardaphe Anthony Julian Tamburri Sabrina Vellucci (Program Directors), Mary Jo Bona, David Aliano, Donna Chirico, Daniele Fiorentino and Roberto Dolci.
A big hug to my colleagues Francesca Amato, Daniela Dal Pra, Elisabetta D’Amanda, Lilia Di Pierro, Alice Fischetti, Joe Gross, Eilis Kierans, Daniele Laudadio, Michael Limmer, Giannina, H.J. Manzanari, Enrico Mariani, Olena Moskalenko, Arturo Pagan, Erica, Kara Pernicano, Carla Simonini.

Hi! It was great hearing about the work you did over the summer regarding the diaspora. As “part” of that diaspora, I was very interested.
I was wondering if you will be teaching any in-person classes in the near future. And, my husband is interested, too, in a more beginning level class. But he is like me – much better suited to in-person instruction.
I traveled to Los Angeles to meet with the Italian Consulate for my interview for citizenship in February. I was scheduled for an appointment on a Monday morning. On Friday night, I got an email from my lawyer in Rome that the consulate said they were still not seeing people in person, but they had all my materials. Imagine if I had not gone there and depended on them NOT wanting to see people in person? Then, it would be certain that they WOULD want to see me and we’d have to get in the car and drive to Los Angeles. So, you can see, I am learning already about the Italian government.
I am still on schedule to retire in October of next year and I plan to go to the school you recommended in Castel Raimondo in the beginning of 2024.
We will be going to Italy in April, I believe. We are taking my cousin and also my mother in law. (I know. But, I survived a trip with her to Firenze, so I am a veteran.) We will be going first to Venezia then take the train to spend a few days in Torino. We are thinking about retiring there for a number of reasons. First, it is a real city with real services and it is not very “touristy” like other Northern cities. They have good transit, many hospitals, doctors, reasonable housing, etc. I love Milano but it is so expensive – especially to buy an apartment!
Please keep me in mind if you start classes up again.
Best wishes, warmest regards,
David Nava
